Farringdon Station Construction commences

Friday, May 3, 2013

Work has finally commenced on Farringdon Station with the break-out of the piles and the first meters of excavation of the STW2-PL1 pilot Tunnel.
Unlike other construction sites along the Crossrail Project scheme, Farringdon station is not located within the sediments of the well known London Clay, but situated below within the so called 'Lambeth Group', which comprises of stiff the very stiff , partly silty sandy Clays of the Upper Mottled beds, the Laminated beds, the Lower Shelly beds, the Lower Mottled beds and the sediments of the Upnor formation. Sand and Gravel lenses of various size and composition are expected to be encountered during the various excavation stages, occasionally accompanied by water ingress.
