Bank-Monument Station is a London Underground station located in the City of London. It is a key interchange served by five lines and the DLR (Figure 1). The Bank Station Capacity Upgrade (BSCU) aims to relieve heavy passenger congestion during peak hours for boarding, alighting and interchange, provide step free access to all lines and reduce journey time for pedestrians.
London Underground nominated Dragados as their Design and Build contractor for this £563M project. Dr. Sauer & Partners is responsible for all sprayed concrete lining (SCL) tunnelling design and the assessment of impacts on existing station tunnels. Throughout the design phase, the entire supply chain has been working together in a co-located office to facilitate communication and achieve the “Best for Bank”.

BSCU will provide step free access routes from ground level down to the Northern line platform tunnels with a new ticket hall at King William Street. The total length of new SCL tunnels is 1,200m; tunnel cross-sections range from 10m2 to 90m2 (Figure 2). The works include:
- Three escalator barrels
- One moving walkway tunnel
- 500m of new running tunnel
- One platform tunnel 116m long
- Two tie-ins to the existing Northern line cast iron tunnel lining
- Two pile interception to provide for load transfer from buildings above
