Works are underway at Bond Street Station, one of the most complex London Underground station upgrade projects to date. With the sprayed concrete primary lining works almost finished and the secondary lining works approximately 50 % completed, the Bond Street Station Upgrade is striding towards completion.
The engineering and construction teams’ recent efforts were focused on delivering the Southern Tunnels section to the Civils team for fit-out. Therefore, finalising the Southern Tunnels (including Shaft 1) sprayed concrete secondary lining marked a significant milestone in the project programme. With all the challenges brought about in working alongside a fully functioning station, ground-breaking design and engineering were required to reach the intermediate peak of two years‘ hard work by finishing 127m of SCL tunnels in this high-profile project.
In the near future, the primary lining works will be completed through excavation and support of the remaining 4m of the Lift 3 Shaft. Once finalised, this structure will grant a step-free access route to the Jubilee line, Central line and the Crossrail Tunnels.
In the Northern Tunnels, most progress has been seen in the excavation and support of the Binocular Tunnels. With the completion of these tunnels, the connection from the existing ticket hall all the way to the Jubilee line platform tunnels was accomplished, which will help with handling the constantly increasing numbers of passengers in the vast London Underground network once it is opened to the public. The construction challenge this structure posed was enormous and the constant interaction between the engineering, design and the construction teams was the secret to a successful completion.
The Dr. Sauer & Partners team as Sprayed Concrete Lining specialists act as sub-consultant to the general designer Halcrow/Atkins. Working closely with the Joint Venture of Costain and Laing O’Rourke by providing 24/7 design representation, including site support and design verification during construction, the Dr. Sauer & Partners team will continue on site until the structural completion of the tunnelling works.
