The long awaited Devil's Slide Tunnel on Highway 1 south of San Francisco opened to traffic after more than 5 years of excavation. The invitation-only opening ceremony drew several hundred people, many of them local residents who fought for the tunnel over several decades. Approximately 420,000yd3, or 21,000 truckloads of rock and dirt, were excavated to build the tunnels. The US$430 million tunnel project bypasses a stretch of US Highway 1 notorious for rockslides, land slippages and lengthy road closures. Congratulations to Caltrans; contractor Kiewit Pacific; tunnel designers ILF and HNTB; the construction inspection team of URS/Dr Sauer Group JV, and all of the men and women who worked on the tunnel.
