The American Underground Construction Association periodically recognizes significant achievements and individuals in the United States underground construction industry. After a solicitation of nominations from the membership, the 2004 Awards Committee, chaired by Thomas F. Peyton, Vice President, Parsons Brinckerhoff, reviewed the nominations and made its recommendations to the AUA Board of Directors. At their meeting on January 28, 2004, in New York City, the AUA Board voted unanimously on the following 2004 Awards for Outstanding Individual in the Underground Construction Industry, Outstanding Planning for Underground Projects, Special Award and for
Outstanding Underground Project – Exchange Place Improvement Project – Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.For the restoration of the Exchange Place Station complex in New Jersey, damaged as a result of the attacks of 9/11/2001.
The awards will be presented at the banquet for the North American Tunneling 2004 Conference, Tuesday evening, April 20, 2004, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA.
The Dr. Sauer Group played an active part in the rehabilitation of the Exchange Place Station complex in New Jersey by providing remedial design services and on site construction/design support. The station’s rehabilitation also involved a previously planned expansion of the passenger platforms, new cross overs and modifying the profile of existing tunnels.
