The d2 “Dulles Development” began in 2000 and passengers have benefited from some of the many planned improvements. One such improvement will open to the public next month: An underground pedestrian tunnel connecting the Main Terminal to the Concourse B opened on November 22, 2004. The 40-foot-wide tunnel under the taxilanes, equipped with moving walkways provides passengers with an alternative to traveling in the behemoth mobile lounges. |

The Dr. G. Sauer Corporation, a subconsultant for EarthTech (formerly known as Kaiser Engineers) was responsible for the NATM tunnel design and the waterproofing and monitoring of a cut-and-cover structures at both ends of the tunnel. Due to funding challenges, the design and construction were broken into three packages; the shell package which consisted a cut-and-cover structure and a mined tunnel, the early finish package which consisted of partial MEP of the cut-and-cover structure and the finish package which consisted of the second cut-and-cover structure and connection to the mined tunnel as well as the MEP and architectural finishes for the remainder of the project. |
Further information about this project can be found in our projects section, and in the paper "Tunneling under Dulles Airport" by Diane Hirsch, Pamela Moran and Arun Patel.
