RETC Seattle 2005

The 2005 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference was held in Seattle, WAfrom June 27 - 29, 2005.  This year’s conference offered a diverse array of interesting papers that spanned all aspects of underground construction and tunneling, as well as a forecast for future projects.  One of the highlights of the event was a site tour atSound Transit's Beacon Hill Station project site.  The underground station will be a crucial part of the Seattle Link Light Rail expansion and was designed by the Dr. G. Sauer Corporation (DSC) as a subcosultant to the Hatch Mott MacDonald / Jacobs Joint Venture.

Dry Cut-and-Cover Station for MBTA in Boston

With the recent opening of the Silverline Phase II the MBTA did not only put in service a 2 mile long section of running tunnels containing technically challenging segments such as immersed tubes through the Fort Point Channel and NATM binocular tunnels at the historic Russia Wharf Building, but also opened two new underground stations along the alignment.

Beacon Hill Progress: Slurry Wall Construction in Progress

The construction at Sound Transit's Beacon Hill Station is progressing on schedule. The construction of slurry wall panels for Headhouses and Shafts has been started recently. 
Meanwhile, exploratory drilling is under way to determine the extent of water bearing sand and silt layers. These will be improved by jet grouting from the surface and dewatering with deep wells.

Santiago's Line 2 South opens!

On 22 December 2004 President Lagos opened the third and last segment of a line extension program undertaken by Metro Santiago over the last five years. The Line 2 South Extension will add 2.3km of track and two stations to the network of Santiago Metro. The terminal station, La Cisterna at the intersection of Gran Avenida José Miguel Carrera and Américo Vespucio Sur Beltway, two major highways in the south of Santiago, will be the future connection to the western spur the new Line 4, currently under construction. The line extension was designed and constructed in less than five years and the cost for the civil works were slightly below $30 million.

Dulles Walkback Tunnel complete!

The d2 “Dulles Development” began in 2000 and passengers have benefited from some of the many planned improvements.  One such improvement will open to the public next month.

Dr. Gerhard Sauer at Stanford University

On October 20th 2004 Dr. Gerhard Sauer presented a lecture on his article "Tunneling and Beyond" in Prof. Russel Clough's construction management class at Stanford University.

The Audience consisted of graduate students and interested members of the industry.

Design Progress at Pittsburgh's North Shore Connector

The Port Authority of Allegheny County is currently undertaking an expansion of the T to the north of the city which includes 3 underground stations and 1 aerial station connected by bored tunnels under the Allegheny River, cut-and-cover tunnels and a mined tunnel using NATM.

The Dr. G. Sauer Corporation, a subconsultant for DMJM+Harris, is responsible for the waterproofing design of all cut-and-cover and mined structures as well as the NATM design of a 440 foot section of double track tunnels south of the proposed Convention Center Station.

"On-call" Contracts awarded to DSC in New York

In recent months DSC has been awarded three "On-call" Contracts as a sub-consultant to major engineering firms in the New York area. While one contract is for standard Architectural/Engineering (A/E) "On-call" services for the MTA-NYCT, in which DSC will provide tunnel expertise for various federally funded projects, the other two are focused entirely on security issues.

Finally good news at Devil's Slide

By signing a promise into law, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger gave the green light to the Devil's Slide tunnel project Thursday, clearing the way for Caltrans to begin work on a project that has survived eight years of planning and negotiation. 
"Hooray!" said County Supervisor Rich Gordon, summing up the feelings of those who have been working on the project for close to a decade or more. "The real celebration is when the ribbon is cut, but I'll take today's victory."
