Contractors at the Devil's Slide project are making progress. Recently, the two bridges connecting the North Portal with Highway 1 were completed and while probing and dewatering programs are implemented from the North Portal to mitigate groundwater inflows during the upcoming tunneling, two roadheaders constantly dig their way forward coming from the South.
Exactly four years after excavation of the tunnels for the Beacon Hill Station began, Sound Transit celebrated the grand opening.
On July 18, 2009 officials from FTA, Sound Transit and the City of Seattle took part in the opening ceremony of Seattle's first line of the future light rail system. More than 90.000 riders joined them to experience the new service.
During the opening weekend they could enjoy free rides along the 14 mile Central Link Light Rail Train line between downtown Seattle and SeaTac International Airport with its 12 new stations.
The new Pajares Tunnel is a 25.7 km (15.5 mi) long railway tunnel connecting La Pola de Gordon in Leon with Telledo in Asturias
on the Alta Velocidad Espanola (AVE) high speed rail line fromValladolid to Gijon.
Devil's Slide Tunnel in Early Stages of Excavation
Two 120-ton roadheaders are grinding through favorable ground conditions in the early stages of construction on the Devil’s Slide Tunnel.
Excavation on the Hwy 1 project south of San Francisco began November 2007 from the south portals.

Excavation is underway on what will be California’s longest highway tunnel. The Devil’s Slide Tunnel will bypass a section of Hwy 1 south of San Francisco plagued by landslides and grade subsistence that have closed the road for months at a time.
In September, Caltrans officials, local politicians and the public gathered at the construction site to celebrate this major milestone that has been more than 40 years in the making.
The North Link Transit Partners Joint Venture (NTP JV) was selected to provide final design services for the Sound Transit's University Link project in Seattle, WA. The JV is comprised of Jacobs Associates, HNTB Corporation, and Earth Tech, Inc.
Both shafts, the Main Shaft and the Ancillary Shaft have been constructed, and the Concourse Cross Adits North and South have been excavated. At 45ft width, these are the largest tunnels excavated in soft ground in the United States to date using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). To minimize the risk of ground loss in the extremely complex geology, the dual side wall drift excavation method was used. In addition, the ground was improvement by dewatering and jet grouting and special pre-support measures such as pipe umbrellas, spiling and grouting are implemented.

Currently, the Washington DC METRO system only goes as far west as the Vienna stop, which leaves a gaping hole between western communities such as Tysons Corner, Reston, the Dulles Airport, and Ashburn.
