Services Provided by URS/DSC
The URS / Dr. G. Sauer Corporation JV was awarded the Caltrans on-call contract for providing Construction Inspection Services for the Devil’s Slide Tunnel project in Pacifica, California. The URS/DSC JV will provide SEM/NATM engineers and field inspectors, engineering geologists, civil, mechanical and electrical inspection personnel and other technical support services as needed. URS/DSC will be working as an integrated Team with the Caltrans Construction Management Team in their field office, which is located in Pacifica, just South of San Francisco.

Third Annual Houston Transportation and Mobility Conference on December 1st and 2nd, 2005.
MBTA of Boston, MA opens first new transit tunnel line since 1918. The opening marked the completion of the Silverline Phase II segment of the Bus Rapid Transit system in the downtown business district. The new tunnel route is constructed beneath the historic Russia Wharf waterfront complex and crosses the Fort Point channel to the Court House Station. To complete this challenging engineering project several innovative methods of tunnel construction were used, including NATM and immersed tube tunnels.
Traffic Planners in urban areas have three options for establishing new arteries or expanding existing lines: to locate them at grade, to elevate them or to put them underground. Unfortunately, capital costs are usually the governing factor used for deciding which option to use. As environmental, social and real estate issues are increasingly getting into the equation as do maintenance and operational costs, planners may look underground for the solution.

The BSCES Geo-Institute will be holding a one-day seminar on "Recent Advances in Geotechnical Engineering" on Saturday, October 29, 2005 at Bentley College. Over ten speakers will cover topics such as recent advances in automated data collection, field testing, composite/light weight materials, alternative foundation systems and innovative tunnel construction techniques.
July 5, 2005 - Just arrived at the Port of Seattle, Sound Transit's new Mitsubishi tunnel boring machine (TBM) after transport from the factory located in Kobe, Japan. The TBM will be used to construct the twenty foot diameter parallel running tunnels for Sound Transit's Link Light Rail through Seattle's Beacon Hill. The tunnels will pass through the Beacon Hill Station complex located mid-way along the line as shown below.
The 2005 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference was held in Seattle, WAfrom June 27 - 29, 2005. This year’s conference offered a diverse array of interesting papers that spanned all aspects of underground construction and tunneling, as well as a forecast for future projects. One of the highlights of the event was a site tour atSound Transit's Beacon Hill Station project site. The underground station will be a crucial part of the Seattle Link Light Rail expansion and was designed by the Dr. G. Sauer Corporation (DSC) as a subcosultant to the Hatch Mott MacDonald / Jacobs Joint Venture.
With the recent opening of the Silverline Phase II the MBTA did not only put in service a 2 mile long section of running tunnels containing technically challenging segments such as immersed tubes through the Fort Point Channel and NATM binocular tunnels at the historic Russia Wharf Building, but also opened two new underground stations along the alignment.
The construction at Sound Transit's Beacon Hill Station is progressing on schedule. The construction of slurry wall panels for Headhouses and Shafts has been started recently.
Meanwhile, exploratory drilling is under way to determine the extent of water bearing sand and silt layers. These will be improved by jet grouting from the surface and dewatering with deep wells.
