The responsibilities include constructability evaluations, alignment and construction alternatives studies and preparation of preliminary design documents. Alternatives, including deep bored tunnel vs. shallow NATM tunneling will be evaluated.

Geology description

Rugged bedrock hills consisting of highly deformed fractured rock of the Franciscan formation, overlain by sedimentary marine deposits (Colma Sands), fluvial deposits (Alluvium) and artificial fill. Very dense sands, inter-fingering of moderately plastic stiff silty clay.

Pressure tunnel with a lenght of 7 km (4.3 mi) and a diameter of 10 m (32.8 ft). Excavation in full face, top heading and invert according to encountered rock conditions. Initial support with lattice girders, steel fiber reinforced shotcrete and rock bolts. Grouting pipe spiling as pre-support for areas with deteriorated rock.

Volcanic rock and tertiary sediments; lavas and lavas brechosas andesitas, lavas con niveles de conglomerados finos y arenisacas. Rock intrusions in the form of diorite and diabase.

11.6 m diameter shaft, approx. 45 m deep. Concrete segmental construction to 24.95 m OD. NATM construction to the base at -43.25 m OD with a 7.5 m span TBM launch chamber and mucking bunker, 40 m long, and 4.0 m diameter backshunt adit, 13.5 m long.

Geology description

Made Ground overlying Marine Gravels overlying upper Chalk. The NATM shaft and adits were excavated within the Upper Chalk which had numerous flint bands. Seawater was consistently flowing trough the joints and flint bands.
